Why Barcode Label Quality Matters in Herbariums and Libraries
In collections management, even the smallest detail can have a lasting impact. That's why at Sciamed, we apply the same uncompromising standards to archive and herbarium labels that we bring to healthcare, because the integrity of a collection depends on it.
Not all barcodes are equal
Barcodes are the backbone of modern collections management. In herbariums, they link pressed specimens to digital databases, provenance records, and taxonomy systems that may have been built over centuries. In libraries, they connect physical volumes to cataloguing, loan, and reservation systems relied upon by researchers, students, and the public alike.
Yet not all barcode labels are created equal.
Barcode print quality is measured using ANSI (American National Standards Institute) grading standards, with Grade A being the highest and Grade D to F considered unreadable or unreliable. While Grade C labels may still scan on some systems, they sit dangerously close to the minimum threshold. In environments where specimens and volumes must be tracked reliably for decades, "just acceptable" simply isn't good enough.
We only supply Grade A and B labels
At Sciamed, we exclusively supply ANSI Grade A and B barcode labels for archive, herbarium, and library applications. We feel anything less introduces unnecessary risk to irreplaceable collections.
Our labels are produced under strict quality controls, with on-site verification technology testing the first, last, and random samples from every batch.
This ensures:
The hidden cost of lower-grade labels
Lower-grade labels introduce risk and cost into environments where accurate, long-term tracking is essential. When a label fails to scan, staff must intervene manually - adding time, introducing the possibility of human error, and slowing digitisation programmes or loan processing.
In herbariums, the consequences can be particularly significant. Specimens are often unique, irreplaceable, and of significant scientific value. A label that degrades, lifts, or fails to adhere reliably to a mount can sever the connection between a physical specimen and its digital record. A loss that cannot always be recovered.
In libraries, poor-quality labels on high-use items can result in scanning failures at the point of issue or return, creating backlogs, mislaid items, and inaccurate stock records.
Collection integrity is non-negotiable
Our commitment to Grade A and B barcode labels is about more than compliance. It's about confidence in your collection, both now and in the future.
We support herbariums, libraries, museums, and archive institutions with verified, traceable, and dependable labelling solutions, so that every scan protects the records and collections you've spent years building.
